"We have to explain it. There is no prediction about 2012," said Erik Velasquez, an etching expert at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). "That's the wrong interpretation."

Sven Grönemeyer, researcher Maya code of La Trobe University in Australia, are trying to unravel the meaning of that calendar, consider what is known as the last day reflected a transition from one era to the next era, namely the return of Bolon Yokte.
"Because Yokte Bolon has been present on the day of creation, it seems only natural for the Maya when Bolon Yokte will come again," he said.
The institute stated, of about 15,000 official glyphic text found in the various areas that were previously the Maya empire, only two mentioned the 2012.
"The Mayans did not think about humanitarian issues, global warming, or predict the poles will fuse into one," said Alfonso Ladena, professor of the Complutense University of Madrid. "It is we are projecting our concerns to them."
